2009 Awards of Recognition for Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities
Each year, Humanities Tennessee provides up to six Tennessee teachers with an Award of Recognition for Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities. The award includes a $2000 professional development fellowship for the teacher and a $1500 grant to the teacher's school for humanities materials or projects. Since 1985, Humanities Tennessee has awarded over $356,000 to 153 Tennessee teachers and schools. This year's recipients are:
- Megan Allen — Lockeland Design Center Elementary, Nashville, Spanish, Grades 2-4
- Proposal for Professional Development Award: The nominee wishes to attend a summer course for teachers of Spanish as a second language at the Center of Cross-Cultural Study in Seville, Spain.
- Proposal for School Award: The nominee wishes to acquire humanities resources for her Spanish program
- Amanda Gricunas — Greeneville Middle School, Greeneville, Visual Art, Grades 6-8
- Proposal for Professional Development Award: The nominee wishes to attend a lecture by education specialist Daniel Pink, as well as travel to San Francisco to study art education at the de Young Museum, 826 National (a nonprofit co-founded by Dave Eggers dedicated to helping teachers and students to observe, discuss, and produce great writing), and Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Berkeley.
- Proposal for School Award: The nominee wishes to acquire humanities resources for her school.
- Michael Halliburton — Collierville High School, Collierville, German, AP European History, ESL
- Proposal for Professional Development Award: The nominee wishes to travel to Germany to study art, architecture, and German theatre.
- Proposal for School Award: The nominee wishes to acquire humanities resources for his German and History courses.
- Marie Maddox — Gatlinburg-Pittman High School, Gatlinburg, Language Arts, Latin, Journalism
- Proposal for Professional Development Award: Though a veteran classroom teacher in Language Arts, the nominee has no formal training in journalism, a subject she was assigned this year. She wishes to attend a journalism workshop for high school teachers this summer. The workshops focus on the humanistic concerns of journalism such as media ethics and law.
- Proposal for School Award: The nominee wishes to acquire humanities resources for her school.
- Angela Robbins — Cumberland County High School, Crossville, French
- Proposal for Professional Development: The nominee wishes to travel to France, specifically Paris, Provence, Monaco.
- Proposal for School Award: The nominee wishes to acquire humanities resources for her classroom.
- Patricia Skates — Red Bank High School, Chattanooga, Government, American History, World Geography
- Proposal for Professional Development: The fellow wishes to attend an intensive workshop on Congress and Congressional History at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio.
- Proposal for School Award: The nominee wishes to acquire humanities resources for her school.
