Humanities Tennessee’s Shared Futures Lab (SFL) is pleased to announce our partnership with the National Trail of Tears Association (ToTA) and Tennessee Chapter to offer scholarships to attend the National Trail of Tears annual conference in Chattanooga, October 14-16, 2024.
This initiative stems from our SFL’s goal to ensure that our future history includes the stories, experiences and perspectives of all Tennesseans. The conference scholarships are an opportunity to deepen our local history stewardship, to support the de-centering of dominant narratives in our collective understanding and make our current work more meaningful to our future counterparts.
In its 27th year, the conference is an opportunity to connect tribal leadership with local communities, and includes site visits, speakers, evening events, pre/post conference activities, and a keynote by Dennis Jay Hannah. For details about the conference agenda and lodging, visit the ToTA website.
Each scholarship provides for up to 20 Tennesseans:
- conference registration
- an annual membership in the ToTA-TN Chapter
Scholarships are available to:
- TN residents whose work—paid or volunteer—requires educating the public about the Trail of Tears and associated tribes
- first-time attendees and new members have priority
The scholarship application period is now closed. For questions contact Melissa: melissa@humtn.org.
