NEWMAN TO NOW Exhibit Opening

June 15, 2019 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm CDT

Don Newman was a local photographer who captured thousands of iconic images of Memphis structures and streetscapes during the 1940s-60s. Many of Mr. Newman’s images show beloved buildings that have been demolished or changed drastically since the time of the photographs. Gary Walpole, owner of Walpole Photography, has over 30 years of professional experience. He knew Don Newman personally and worked with several of his peers. Beginning in 2006, Mr. Walpole has also reshot many of the same scenes that appear in the Newman photographs to create “then and now” comparisons. He has continued this process as part of the Newman to Now Project.

Along with the Newman and Walpole photographs, the digital exhibit includes newspaper articles that illustrate the forces behind changes at each site, as well as video interviews, and a virtual walking tour with Jimmy Ogle. This material is brought together as a unique, interactive online historic visualization.

Memphis Heritage has managed the Newman Collection since 2002 in agreement with Don’s family. Images from The Newman’s Memphis collection are available for purchase through the MHI offices and can be viewed at www.newmansmemphis.com

Memphis Heritage will host an exhibit opening event for the Newman to Now Digital Exhibit at 3pm on June 15 at Howard Hall (2282 Madison Ave.). This event will include a demonstration of the digital exhibit, a demonstration of the type of camera used by Don Newman, and light refreshments.

Humanities Tennessee is pleased to support this program.
