Join Our Team: Director of Development

Humanities Tennessee is a nonprofit organization that has fostered community and civility across the state through engaging public humanities programs and grants for more than fifty years. We are seeking a Director of Development to lead the planning and implementation of a comprehensive fundraising program and help create a strategic new revenue model for the organization over the next several months, in coordination with the Executive Director and statewide Board of Directors.

This is a key leadership position reporting to the Executive Director. You will be responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive fundraising program with a focus on identifying, pursuing, and stewarding new major individual and institutional gifts and program partnerships. You will be a vital partner to our Executive Director and Board of Directors, empowering them to be successful ambassadors for our mission. This is a hybrid position, blending remote, in-office, and in-the-field work.

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop and execute a strategic fundraising plan to grow support from individuals, foundations, and corporations, with special focus on major and sustaining gifts. Aim to steward support for our programs and initiatives, including the annual Southern Festival of Books and Authors in the Round.
  • Build and nurture strong, lasting relationships with our donors and partner institutions, focusing on a donor-centric approach to enhance their experience and engagement.
  • Partner with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, providing them with the research, systems, and support they need to cultivate prospects and secure major gifts.
  • Lead our grant-writing program, from researching new funding sources to writing compelling proposals and managing reporting.

Who You Are:

  • An experienced fundraising professional with 5+ years of experience and a proven record of success.
  • A strategic thinker who enjoys building systems, researching prospects, and planning for long-term growth.
  • An excellent relationship-builder who is passionate about our mission and ready to shout it from the rooftops.
  • Ridiculously detail-oriented, with a great memory and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative team environment. Experience with donor databases, especially Salesforce, is a plus.
  • A creative and assertive (not aggressive) professional who is goal-oriented and loves connecting with people.

Salary and Benefits:

Actual compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience.

  • Salary Range: $70,000 – $80,000.
  • Benefits: Package includes medical, vision, and dental insurance, and company contributions to a retirement plan. Generous paid leave policy, plus at least twelve paid holidays per year.

To Apply:

To apply, please combine a compelling cover letter and your resume into a single PDF file and email to personnel@humtn.org by October 20, 2025. No phone calls, please.
