Making Memphis: 200 Years of Community

Memphis Museums

Grant Amount: $9,895

The goal of the project “was to design an in-house exhibit that appealed to an array of Memphians and spanned Memphis’ past, present and future by illustrating the interconnectedness of history through content and design. We centered the city’s complicated history in the narrative by interpreting painful moments in our civic past – the legacy of slavery, lynchings, and MLK Jr.’s assassination – alongside stories of vibrant neighborhoods, artistic and entrepreneurial innovation, and increased diversity. The impact of the relationships built…is clear in the exhibit, from artifacts on loan, to individual stories highlighted in theme panels that connect people to larger events. We are positioned to improve representation of these communities in the museum’s exhibits, collections, and programming.”
